The 28 Blog Hop - Craft.Create.Play.

Welcome old and new to the 28 Blog Hop and welcome to my corner of the blogging world.  You should have arrived over from MONICA’S blog, if not dont worry there is a recap of the hop below.

So let me introduce myself for you that are new here.  My name is Nancy and I live on the East Coast of England in my caravan by the sea.  I love all this crafty and Hello Kitty, hence the blog name and my HK tattoo!  I have been scrap booking for about about 4 years now and love all the crafty friends both in real and virtual life that I have made through this hobby/obsession.

When I saw on the Studio Calico forum that Jamie Leija  was planning on doing a blog hop to celebrate her turning 28, I knew I wanted to get involved, especially as I have not long turned 28 myself.  I have been following Jamie’s blog for a couple of years as she used to run a challenge blog I took part in and she does the most awesome travel scrapping too.  She has also just opened an Etsy shop for her beautiful cards, check it out.

There are some fab people taking part and I am looking forward to seeing all the ‘28’ theme projects.   So hop around and be sure to comment on everyone's blog for a chance to win the grand prize!!

What's the grand prize?!

A $28* gift voucher to the online retailer of your choice!  I know I would be choosing a Studio Calico voucher, especially with the cheap international postage now.

*Really, it's a $30 gift voucher but that's not as fun to say as $28 for the 28th blog hop on September 28!!

To stand a chance of winning just leave a comment on each of the blogs, then make your way back to Jamie’s blog  and comment again to let her know you left some love for us all. You have until 8:00pm EST Sunday, 30 September to comment.

So here is my 28 project….

I turned 28 in July and I was very lucky to have two birthday parties, of course this meant 2 cakes as well to aid the celebration  I decided to scrap my two 28th Birthday cakes for this 28 blog hop.

sept 093

The first cake was made by my sister, it has become a tradition that she make my birthday cake.  I have had robots and princess castles, but this year I wanted a particular cake.  I wanted the stripe layer sponge cake, and I was not disappointed.  I had shown my sister a couple of photos from Pinterest, where my love for these cakes began and she created this.  The sponge inside goes from dark pink to light pink layers with beautiful buttercream, it even had glittery hearts on.  I was a lucky girl to get the cake I wanted and I celebrated with my family in the caravan the day before my birthday.

I started this LO in the way I am starting many of them at the moment and that is with spraying and stamping on the background first.  For this I took some Kraft cardstock, a mask, white acrylic paint and turquoise and white mists.  It was once this was dry I started to layer up and create my clusters.  Everything on this LO was from my scraps basket, some of the papers have been in it for over 2 years, but they eventually made it on to a LO.

Next on to my second cake and my second party.  This cake was brought for me by my boyfriend and was a lovely chocolate sponge, which he managed to cram all the candles on to.   He and his mum brought it in to me after we had returned from a meal out, it was a beautiful finish to a lovely day.

This LO was created using some of the recent stash from the Studio Calico Monthly kits.  I loved the dollies and knew they would be perfect on the LO about cake.  It also features my beloved veneers, I have so many and these stars just keep on going and going, I also love the Prima pearl drops too.  I used to avoid oranges and salmon pinks but now I love them and they feature on my LO’s more and more.

So that was my ‘28’ project, I have lots more photos to scrap from the day and even a few more cake shots!  I am looking forward to my 29th birthday and thinking about if it should be a 3 cake occasion!!

So now on to the logistics of the blog hop the order…..

A Crafty Saturday at Birds in the Barn

iphone sept 242

So it was a couple of months ago that Janet mentioned at the Bramford crop about some up and coming classes at Bird in the Barn ran by Hels Sheridan.  I was up for it despite not really being in to altered art, but any excuse for a day of crafting is good by me.

So this morning I set off early and met Janet in Ipswich before making our way down the A12 for a day of crafting fun.  We were not sure what we were going to do but were both looking forward to the challenge.  We arrived early, but this gave us a chance to look around the gardening centre and have a coffee before we started.  First stop was to see the Koi Carp that were a talking point, and they were huge and expensive!!

Next we wandered over to the shop and looked around while we waited for the classroom to open and to start playing.  It was a bit dangerous wandering around the shop as there were lots of lovely things to look at, luckily the class started and I was only mentally bankrupt.

We started the class by learning what we were doing.  Hel Sheridan had  got an altered canvas project for us to work on, which meant lots of layers, paint and flowers.  It was great fun and the time flew by.

This is my first layer of paper and masking tape.

This is with the first coat of paint.

We broken for a lunch break and many of us went to sit out in the sun near the lovely pond, there were loads of dragonflies buzzing around.

After lunch we cracked on with experimenting with stencils and paints and embossing powders.  I had such fun as being a scrapbooker mainly I do not play with these things.  It brought back great memories of the 4 years I spent at art college painting everyday and experimenting.  The afternoon was  broken up with a lovely piece of cake before we got to the finial stage of embellishment.

I must admit I was not really sure about adding all the flowers and fuss as that really is not my style but after digging through Hels huge box of flowers I found some that I loved and set about adding them to my canvas.

Here is the end result, nothing like I imagined first thing at all, but something I am very proud of indeed.  I brought a few bits in the shop, including a couple of stencils/masks which I am looking forward to using.  It was great at the end to look at what the other 11 ladies had achieved and how  different they  all were.

When I got home I must admit I was keen to keep playing,  I dug out some old supplies I had from college and set about playing with the next Bramford Challenge piece.  I am not sure how it will end up but by the end of the evening my desk was looking a happy place indeed.

I have hung the canvas in my hall way  and am very happy with how it looks and look forward to experimenting more with the techniques I learned today.  So thanks to Janet for organising the class for me, it was great.

Thanks for looking.
